We would like you to meet Chuck Allen, a talented J24 sailor that has been involved also in many other One Design classes like the Shields, J80 among others. Chuck has been working for North for over 11 years at the Newport, RI North. We are proud to have Chuck on our team!
No one better than Chuck to tell us his story...
SAILING
I started sailing later than most the kids in Rhode Island, around 13 years old. Grew up in Wickford, RI, playing all kinds of sports when my parents sent me to sailing classes down at the local yacht club. Much to their surprise I was sailing The International 420 Worlds in Italy three years later.
High School and College Sailing was great-I met people then that I still hang out with and see around the yacht clubs. Most of funny stories come from the old days of working and racing with Dan Neri and that crew-cannot tell most of them :)
FAMILY & FUN
I live in Wickford, RI-a small Seaport town about 10 miles from Newport. Married to Becky Allen we have had a our place for 11 years, 3 acres with two cats and no kids. Becky is a big runner and wins lots of trophies, she rivals the sailing trophies brought home.
When I'm not sailing I play squash in an organized league, love most Boston Based Sports Teams, enjoy cooking and badminton.
My goals in life are friends and family, not sweating the small stuff and making sure Ched Proctor gets enough to eat and keeping him awake during our meetings!
NORTH SAILS
I had two jobs coming out of college: West Marine Products and North Sails. One day I got a call from my college buddy Pete Colby saying “we have the perfect job for you-Cruising Direct (a subsidiary of NS). Next thing I know I was flying from San Francisco to Oakland to interview with Gary Weisman and it was a done deal… been here for 11 years already. I transferred to One Design around five years ago and have been racing boats and selling OD Sails for five-six years.
The culture and the North people are the best in our industry. It makes it a ton of fun to come to work each day when things are upbeat. Also, working on the water is not too bad either!
North Sails has the best of everything when it comes to sailmakers from design teams, tuning information, sales people and all around resources - all of which are shared with the customers-they simply cannot get this much information anywhere in the world-simple as that!
