2003 Sonar IFDS World Championships

By Brian Hayes

North Sails sweeps top 4 spots at Sonar IFDS World Championships

The 2003 IFDS (International Federation of Disabled Sailing) World Championships were held September 4-14 in Athens, Greece. The Sonar Class had 21 participants from 14 different countries. Udo Hessels (NED) and his team sailed fast and consistently over the 9 race series with all top 4 finishes to win the Gold Medal over Dror Cohen (ISR) and his Silver Medal team by 5 points. John Robertson (GBR) and his team secured the Bronze Medal with 1 race to go in the series and completed his series with a bullet in Race 9. Fourth place went to past World-Champion Jens Kroger (GER).

Although the top 4 teams hailed from different countries with different backrounds and varied experience they all had one thing in common. They all used North Sails One Design Sonar sails. Each team used the standard "SuperMain" and AP++ Jib.

2003 Sonar Midwinter Championships

By Brian Hayes

With only a few hours before the regatta to prepare a borrowed boat, the team of Peter Galloway, Paul Steinborn, Ched Proctor and Ira Cohen dominated a fleet of 19 to win the 2003 Sonar Midwinters held at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club on February 9-12. This is the 3rd straight Midwinter Championship for the Galloway/Steinborn team who won the 8 race series with 1 race to spare.

The winning team, who used the standard North Supermain, AP++ jib and Superlite spinnaker, was joined in the top 9 by 6 other teams who chose North Sails including 3rd place winner Jens Kroger and his team from
Germany. Jens and his team are also the reigning Paralympic World Champions, an event limited to sailors who have some form of handicap or disability, in the Sonar. Jens and his teams' showing at this years Midwinters is a tribute to all athletes with disabilities and their ability to display equal or superior skills in the sport of sailing. In 4th place was past 2 time North American Champion Dave Franzel. Franzel, who like the
1st and 3rd place teams used an all North inventory, had a bit of a handicap himself on the 2nd day as he and his spinnaker trimmer got food poisoning and struggled just to complete all 3 races that day.

Overall North Sails were 1,3*,4 and 6 of the top 9.

Sonar Clinic at Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club

By Brian Hayes

April 20, 2002 - The 2002 Sonar spring sailing season began heating up a bit this past weekend with a one day clinic, run by Brian Hayes, at the Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club in Oyster Bay, NY. 20+ sailors dodged raindrops and made the most of late afternoon, light breezes to get in several hours of on-the-boat training as well as starting and short course drills. The event started at 9 am with a classroom discussion on rig tuning, prebend and sail shape. Two hours of classroom talk led the group onto the docks for a 1 1/2 hour talk on crew work, techniques and responsibilities. After a quick lunch sailors piled on to the 4 available Sonars for an afternoon of practice starts and short course racing. The clinic wrapped up back in the classroom with a synopsis of the days events as well as a thorough question and answer period. Special thanks to Leo Hiatrides for organizing this clinic for his fleet.

The following are tentatively scheduled North One Design Sonar clinics:

  • Seawanhaka Ladies Sailing Program - 2nd or 3rd Weds in June
  • Noroton Yacht Club TBD

2001 SONAR IFDS WORLDS

Report by Brian Hayes

The Canadian team of Brian Mackie, Brian MacDonald and Paul Tingley used superior seamanship, tactics and boat speed to dominate the IFDS World Championships held at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club from Oct. 24-31, 2001.

Using a North SuperMain and AP++ jib, the team on CAN 629 won 6 of the 9 races and placed 2nd once. In fact, while still scoring an OCS from race #5 the Canadians still managed to secure a large enough lead over their competition to sit out race #9 and still win by 7 points!!!

Congratulations also go to top USA finisher Rick Doerr and his team. Rick, who finished 7th overall, took delivery of his new boat the day before the event and, after taking a few races to get everything set up correctly, came on strong at the end of the week for top American honors. Rick's team also used the North SuperMain and AP++ jib.

2001 SONAR COWES RACE WEEK - ENGLAND

Report by Brian Hayes

Peter Galloway and his Sonar team from Noroton Yacht Club traveled to England and were victorious over 16 other Sonar teams during Cowes Race Week. Galloway, and his teammates Jim Linville, Paul Steinborn and John Schultz were best able to battle the windy (20+ mph) series to bring home the win. The breeze played an important part in the event as several teams broke booms, ripped sails and one Sonar was sunk (while being towed in backwards!). The Noroton YC team used an all-North Sails inventory.

2001 SONAR TAPPAN ZEE CHALLENGE

Report by Brian Hayes

The 2001 Sonar Tappan Zee Challenge was held on May 19-20. 13 boats participated in the first regatta of the spring season for Sonar sailors in the northeast. Kirby, a self described "maturing yacht designer", was able to recover from a 720 at the start of race #4 and sail through the fleet to capture the final race of the series and squeak by the Steve Shepstone team from Noroton YC. Shepstone finished 2nd followed by Greg Anthony in 3rd, Paul Callahan in 4th and Julian Clark, from Nyack Yacht Club, in 5th.

Results:

1st - Kirby - North Sails
2nd - Shepstone
3rd - Anthony - North Sails
4th - Callahan
5th - Clark - North Sails

Note: Julian Clark was sailing his first Sonar event. Julian sailed with his wife, his son and the local Junior sailing instructor. Julian got his brand new set of North Sails the week before the regatta. Congratulations Julian!!!
