NOTES TAKEN AT A SNIPE COACHING SESSION

Courtesy North customer Patricia Bazan, April 2009

Tuning

Two settings:

  • Medium breeze: (8-12kts).  Rake at 21.7. Shroud tension at 20-21.  Top of S-hook at top of lower black band.
  • Light wind:  Rake at 21.65.  Shroud tension at 18-19.  S-hook above lower mark.

 Upwind

  • Mainsail trim
    • Ease 1-3 inches of main exactly on puff (in addition to hiking) to keep boat flat.  Pull main in after puff.  Hike hard.  Keep boat flat at all costs.
    • In 10 knots, pull on more cunningham.  Also, a bit of aft puller in breeze.
  • Jib trim
    • In 10 knots of breeze, moved jib leads back 2 holes

Downwind
Puller cleated.
Steer with bodies (crew and helm).  Crew leans on boards to heel to windward and sail low.  Crew brings pole slightly back.  Do opposite to sail high to build speed.

  • Gybes
Crew should help boom over by grabbing and swinging vang over once he’s retracted pole.  I noticed that my steering out of the gybe improved.
  • Leeward Roundings
Make wide tactical rounding.  Leave no holes between you and mark coming out of mark.  Controls are secondary to this.

Action items

  • Mark deck
  • In 10 knots of breeze, moved jib leads back 2 holes on starboard side.  Check port side (jammed) and make even.  Mark lead position.
  • Replace outhaul this Sunday
  • Measure spreader tip to mast distance as well as tip to tip (angle)
