2011 AUDI MELGES 20 WINTER SERIES
Report by Andy Burdick - Photos JOY

Twenty Seven Audi Melges 20’s invaded the Coconut Grove Sailing Club for this years first Winter Series Event. This is the 2nd year of the Melges 20 and the success is in the numbers. To have this many boats at our Winter Series event is fantastic. And, we have 2 more events to go. We could see well over 30 boats at the upcoming events.
What makes the Audi Melges 20 Winter Series unique?
1. We have a great set up at the Coconut Grove Sailing Club. The people there are fantastic and the facility is top notch. We leave our boats rigged at Shake A Leg in between events so you come down to Florida, race and then cover your boat and go back home. A month later you come down again, uncover your boat, race. A fantastic set up.
2. Just 2 days of racing. This is nice because you can fly in Friday, race Saturday and Sunday and then fly out Sunday evening. You don’t miss work and it is easy for crew and family.
3. Professional Race Committee. We all know that great events have great racing. We have Bruce Golison running all of our races and that makes a big difference. Bruce sets a high level and the competitors know that the racing will be at a high standard.
North Sails have been upgrading their Audi Melges 20 sails for 2011. North just introduced a new jib called the J7P and it is really fast in the wide range of sailing conditions. This coupled with our M6 Dacron main you really have good speed and height upwind. Downwind the North Kites are the best! Most boats have them because they are fast and easy to fly for the crew. North has two designs the VMG which is what we would call an all purpose kite – good in all conditions.
We also offer the PowerZone Reacher which fast in the really light air and then again in the breeze above 15 when you sail higher angles. The boat is easier to sail in the windy conditions with this sail.
North Sails continues to refine their sails and help out their customers. The goal is to make you go faster!

2009 MELGES 20 AUDI SAILING SERIES
Giallongo Named 2009 Audi Melges 20 Sailing Series Champion, Dominici Wins Final Showdown in Porto Cervo
20 September 2009 (Porto Cervo, Italy) - The final day of racing in Porto Cervo concluded with two additional heats and Luca Dominici on Mefisto winning the final event of the 2009 Audi Melges 20 Sailing Series. Taking the championship title was Benedetto Giallongo on Value Team. Giallongo’s success is attributed to winning the first four regattas — Lerici, Scarlino, Malcesine and Cagliari.
Dominici delivered a 1-4 punch to the fleet to win the event, hosted by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. Giallongo made a full recovery on Sunday with two third place finishes. This moved him up in the standings from yesterday’s sixth place slot to second overall. Fausto Rubbini on Thule, dropped to third after a disappointing tenth place finish in race one of the day, coming back for a bullet in race two.
The International Audi Melges 20 Class Association fully congratulates these two phenomenal competitors as well as the many who participated in 2009. A sincere thanks is extended to Audi, title sponsor of the series. The fleet looks to announce the 2010 Audi Sailing Series very, very soon.
