2011 Worlds
Britain's Girls score Gold, powered by North!
At the recent 420 World Championship in Buenos Aires, Argentina the British sailors Annabel Vose and Megan Brickwood, aged 16 and 15 respectively, took the gold in both the Ladies and Junior division.
In windy conditions they sailed a consistent series, despite breaking their mast near the end of the first race on day one. Going into the final race they were in second position, however the lighter winds in this race favoured them and they managed to finish far enough ahead of the French Team of Lemaitre and Retornaz to knock them off the top spot and take home gold.
Annabelle and Megan were using the North M7 Main, J9 Jib and the 42S-1 Spinnaker. The French girls finished 3rd in the final results and they were also using the M7 Main and Jib J9.
Mike Wood and Hermione Stanley who were 5th in the Open Fleet used the M7 Main, J5 Jib and MS5 Spinnaker and Tim Gratton and Ed Riley who were 6th overall, and 2nd Juniors, also used the M7 Main, J5 Jib and MS5 Spinnaker.

Annapolis Yacht Club threw its hat into the International 420 ring this week. AYC purchased six Int’l 420s form the Youth Worlds/CISA fleet as a means to begin educating young racers about the agile Int’l 420 and bolster excitement for the boat.
There is a strong revival of the Int’l 420 fleet here in the US and it’s fantastic to see one more club join the ranks.
We just wrapped up a 4-day Int’l 420-specific racing clinic at AYC. Clinic days involved tuning demos, video and photo debriefs, on-the-water drills, and, of course, lots of racing. We saw drifter conditions to 15 knots. Some sailors had raced Int’l 420s before, but most were only familiar to the heavier Club 420. In the end, all were amazed by the responsiveness of the boat and the need to figure out multiple modes both up-wind and down. The Int’l 420 is a boat that rewards tuning, consistency of trim, and crew work. The lighter hull weight only amplifies mistakes and jobs-well-done.
There are multiple teams from around the US heading to Europe this summer. On the schedule are Kiel Week in Germany, Intervela in Italy, the World Championships in Italy, the French Nationals....and more.
This is an exciting time for the US Int’l 420 fleet!!
Special thanks to Jay Kehoe, Amy Gross-Kehoe, and Mattie Farrar for helping with all the logistics of the AYC clinic (including use of AYC's superb classroom for watching the day's video).
