FINN ACCESSORIES

2008 has already been another fantastic year for North Sails One Design in the Finn Class, with the highlight being our seventh consecutive World Championship title! North Sails customers also won every ISAF Grade 1 regatta this year, as well as the Pre-Olympics in Qingdao in 2007.

Since laminated sails came into play back in 1997 North Sails has been at the leading edge of the development of Finn sails.  Over the years we have worked with the fleet’s top sailors to create, improve, and develop our designs.

We are very proud of the consistency and quality of our sails as every customer’s sail is custom built to suit individual mast bend characteristics. This ensures performance, repeatability and customer satisfaction.

2008 Models

Over the years our team has spent hundreds of hours developing shapes to produce a range of designs that covers the whole wind spectrum for all sailors. For 2008 we are promoting the following models*:

HV SERIES

  • HV-2 – Medium/Heavy – 12+ knots – 1mil Technora. (compare D2 & HV-2) ( HV-2 & KM-05) (HV-2 & KA-2)

  • HV-2L – Light/Medium – 8-14 knots – 0.75mil Technora

  • HV-2P – Light – 0-12 knots – SL-500 Polyester

LIGHT AIR SPECIFIC

  • KM-05 – Light / Flat water – 0-12 knots – SL-500 Polyester. (compare HV-2 & KM-05)

  • KA-2 – Light – 0-12 knots – SL-500 Polyester. New for 2008 (compare HV-2 & KA-2)

  • Q-2 – Light / Choppy water – 0-10 knots – Designed for Qingdao conditions – SL-500 Polyester.

HEAVIER SAILOR SPECIFIC

  • D-2 – Medium / Heavy – 12+ knots – 1mil Technora, for the heavier sailor.** (compare D2 & HV-2)

  • D-2L – Light / Medium – 8-14 knots – 0.75mil Technora, for the heavier sailor.**

* All of the above come in a radial panel layout except for the Q-2.

** The D-2 & D-2L fit the HIT and Pata masts best.  Use the HV-2 series fits all masts.

All North mainsails come complete with class insignia, sail numbers, sail battens, windows, tell tales, class label, sail measurement and sail bag.

All North Mainsails can be built to fit all different masts. Click here for complete information on how to measure your mast deflection.

Luff-curve re-cuts available. Contact our Finn experts for details.

Customers often ask for clarification on the differences between our various models. Below is an explanation and a look at the flying shapes.

D-2 versus HV-2

Looking at the above view of the D-2 and HV-2 overlaid on top of one other you can see that the D-2 is a deeper sail overall. This difference is 1% in flying shape. For those who have sailed with both that 1% difference is a noticeably big difference.

The D-2 is the favored choice of the heavier sailor using HIT or Pata mast sections and was used by Rafael Trujillo (ESP) to win the 2007 World Championships in Cascais.

The HV-2 is our most popular design and a great all-around sail. Now available in three different cloth weights to cover any need, the HV-2 is also compatible on all mast sections. This sail is the choice of recent champions Ben Ainslie, Jonas Hogh Christensen, and Ed Wright.

HV-2 versus KM-05

The KM-05 is 3/4% flatter than the HV-2 so you would see a similar picture when looking at the differences to the above view of the D-2 and HV-2.

The Polyester fabrics used in these light sails are the same weight as the D-P Technora 0.75; however with no X-PLY you get a much suppler cloth, hence a more sensitive feel in light air.

Keep in mind with Polyester sails that when the breeze increases this cloth becomes less stable and controllable than the Technora fabrics. For best performance, we recommend a12 knot ceiling.

HV-2 versus KA-2

The New KA-2 shown below in green overlaid on the HV-2 (blue) has proven itself as a great all-purpose light air sail. A flatter back in the lower 1/3 and a slightly finer entry give this sail excellent acceleration and maintained top speed in the light while maintaining power and drive.

Both the KM-05 the KA-2 are manufactured from Bainbridge SL-500 Polyester. By straightening out the sail in these two areas while keeping the depths the same we have created a quick and easy-to-trim mainsail.
