Etchells Sails
Interview by Vince Brun | Photo Blake Jackson/MarbleheadStudio.com
Hank - Everyone had to play hockey in Canada. Awesome sport. Got in to sailing through the family. Have always from a very young age, loved to be on the water. You sailed at the Barcelona Olympics for Canada, and won two Gold Cups ( Worlds ) on the Finns, so clearly you have a fair share of success on your sailing career. What has brought you to the Etchells class? Hank - I sail the Etchells mostly because it is a great boat to sail. First time in the boat was in Melbourne when I was down there for the Finn Gold Cup. Sailed an evening race in the etchells in 25 knots at Brighton YC. We were the last fleet to start. Sailed by everyone/surfing/ sailing straight up wind. Plus it actually looks like a real sail boat in my eye. That is very important to me. I also like sailing a boat where I can control the set up etc. I Have sailed on some bigger boats where everyone knows everything and it is a circus. An etchells is a real racing boat in my opinion. You just won the North American against a very stiff competition. If there were three keys to winning, what would they be? Hank - I would say our main key was good speed. I was sailing with 2 guys that had never actually seen an Etchells before but they are awesome sailors and our boat work was outstanding. ( They weren't too happy without toe straps). Probably the main thing, in a regatta that was very shifty, was we never once had to push a side or a start. I guess that goes back to good speed. We had some very good luck and also some very bad luck like getting race #1 abandoned when we were leading. I guess it balances out over 7 races. How was your approach to the NA’s? Relaxed or ultra focused on doing well at the event? Explain your time leading to the event. Hank - Leading up to the event I sailed a few regattas in July, we actually got up to Marblehead 2 days before so we got a little practice. I always feel allot better in the boat at the end of the regatta because I never get any boat time. I would love to sail a regatta and get a few weeks of practice. Just not going to happen. I know you work on the finance industry and are married and with kids. How do you manage your time between working, family obligations, and sailing? Hank - Now that my kids are getting older my golf handicap is going allot higher. Coaching youth hockey/lacrosse leaves little time for sailing etc. I think the thing that actually helps me in sailing is I really miss it. Love sailing an Etchells. I love sailing/racing. I used to spend allot of time practicing a long time ago and I am running on fumes now. Still love to get out there. Just a pain getting guys organized to sail. What are your Etchells sailing plans for this upcoming season? Hank - I have to look at the schedule. Again gotta get some guys organized. Do you have any rig or sails setup speed secrets, that you want to share with our Etchells friends? Hank - I have been told by sailmakers I have a terrible eye but very good feel. The North's always look so good to me I just try to process how the boat feels relative to how we are going next to the guy next us. I set butt etc, exactly the same as the tuning guide. We were caught a few times with the wrong jib, wrong jib hanks, wrong spinnaker but could always seem to get it working. I know you have other options for sailmaker. Why you decided to sail with North? Are you happy with your choice? Hank - North Sails have been a huge part of my life back in the Finn days. Vince Brun/ Hans Fogh helped me mightily at North and it is something I always remember. Just looking at the results page says allot. The dialogue with Vince on my mast and bend characteristics very early on was exciting and refreshing. I could not be happier with the North's. The little things, hand work, the spreader patch on the main, everything is so well thought out. Etchells Sails

Report by Ched Proctor Steve Girling, with Ched Proctor and Dave Lutian, sailed a flawless 7 race series to win the 2011 Long Island Sound Etchells Championship. This was the teams 2nd consecutive LIS Championship. Jeff Siegel, with Jeff Madrigali, Sean Couvereux and Sarah Callahan were runners-up after pressing the Girling team hard on day 2. Both teams used full North Sails inventories that included the PC-F main, LM-2 single tab, LM-2 double tab jibs and the Full Radial spinnaker. The event, which was hosted by Indian Harbor Yacht Club in Greenwich, CT, featured 16 teams who sailed 7 races in, mostly, easterly breezes. On Saturday PRO Jeff Mertz was able to get 4 races full 4 leg W/L courses completed in 8-12 mph of wind and fog that shrouded the fleet. The Girling Team found these conditions especially appealing and strung off 4 race wins. Sunday’s 3 races were sailed in 10-14 and, while the rest of the fleet began to find the winners circle, including Siegal with a win in race 5, Girling’s 6,3,2 finishes easily secured them the title.

Jeff Dever steered his 13 year old #1090 to Victory in the Etchells Coral Reef Cup regatta held this weekend on Miami’s Biscayne Bay in the seven race series. The 1090 team consisted of North Sails One Designs’ Ched Proctor and David Lutian. They scored 20 points in the seven race series. 26 boats competed in this event which is a follow on for the popular Jaguar series held over the winter in Miami. Finishing third was another North Sails One Design customer Bryon Ehrhart. The sailing conditions were ideal with generally sea breeze direction and air temperature of 80 degrees. Fridays first race was sailed in 6knts building to 10-12 at the end of the race. The second race on Friday had the strongest wind of the series with 16 knots. Saturdays three races again started with a light air race then 2 races in 12-13 Knots. Sundays racing had 9-11 knots. Jeff used a PC+ main and GM jib from 2006 and a new LM2 jib. Spinnakers were a new VMG and Full Radial. Top 3 and sails used:

The 2010 Etchells Nationals championship was run by New York Yacht Club in Newport, RI over the Oct 2-3 week end. 33 boats Attended. All racing was held on the Narragansett Bay course North Of Gould Island. All courses were 4 leg windward leewards with downwind finishes. Saturdays 3 races were run in a light Northerly breeze that totally petered out for the finish on the third race of the day. Chuck Poindexters team with Dave Dyson and Michael Loeb, found the fast lane to take the first race by about a half a leg. The RC ably headed by ........... wasted no time in getting the second race started. In this tricky one old USA 44 was piloted to a close win by Jordan Smith proving that in light conditions a well sailed old boat goes just fine. After the finish the RC debated whether there was sufficient wind to run another but opted to give it a try. After a general recall, the fleet got off to start with a large crowd right under the committee boat. Everyone flipped over to port and raced out to a small area of pressure on the right side. Hank Lammens team did a masterful job of getting off the middle of the line, flipping over to port tack and held on just long enough to get to the right pressure and tacked back to the left at just the right time. This propelled them into a lead they held all the way around to win by another large margin. It seemed to be a day when the rich just got richer. The first 8 boats were able to stay ahead of a large group on the way to the finish. 9-20 something place finished overlapped as the last puff of the day filled from behind. The amazing part of this finish was that you can actually fit 11+ Etchells across a 150 foot finish line without any incident. A little foul language goes a long way! Sunday was sailed in a building North Easterly Breeze which started out with15-18 knots and built to 25 by the third race. It was real Etchells sailing at its best! Steve Girling/s team of this writer and Tucker Edmundson started of the pin and found a nice shift up the middle of the course to jump out to an early lead. Hank Lammens team of Dirk Kneulman and Moose McClintock pushed hard gaining an early advantage on the run to the finish. Some late surfing and a few good pumps saved the day for the Girling team as they held on to win the race. After the finish there was a bit of a wait as the wind showed some right hand shifts that hadnt been there earlier. However those who were suckered by it and fought for the boat end start were highly disappointed. Boats that started further down the line and waited found some good left shifts to come across and attack the right boats that got too near the layline too early. Wade Edwards won this race. Lammens and Siegel did some smart sailinng to finsh 2nd and third. This left them tied at 11 points with Hank dropping an 12 and Siegel only a fifth. In third were Poindexter and Girling with 19 points. The last race was started in a good 25 knots. Girliung again won the pin end start and lead at the weather mark with Lammens and Siegel in close pursuit. With aa quick set and immediate jibe Lammens and Siegel surfed into an inside position on Girling. Aproaching the leeward gate lammens and siegel headed for the left (looking dowind gate and Girling for the right gate. Siegel had a nice position inside lamens nearing the gate but a lammens luffed Siegel and forced him to the outside. Unfortunately Siegels team got their spinnaker wrapped around the headstay with the jib up and took a while to clear it. this allowed Lammens to round cleanly and hold on for the regatta win.
